Mossel Bay ( Afrikaans : Mosselbaai ) is a municipality in the Garden Route District, Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 89,430 on a total area of 2,011 km². The seat of the local government is Mossel Bay .
The community name means "shell bay". The name was given to the bay in 1601 by the Dutch navigator Paulos van Caerden because of the large populations of mussels.
The Mossel Bay seawater desalination plant has been contributing to the water supply here since 2011 . It is the largest drinking water supply system in South Africa based on this technology.

The speakers were 66.4% Afrikaans, 21.1% IsiXhosa and 6.4% English.
