Knysna is a municipality in the Garden Route District, Western Cape Province in South Africa . The municipality has an area of ​​1,059 km². The municipal administration is based in Knysna .

The community name means "deep / dark cliffs", derived from the Khoisan word Nysna or Xnysna .

In 2011 the community had 68,569 inhabitants. Of these, 40.9% were colored , 36.1% black and 21% white.

The spoken language was 49.9% Afrikaans, 27.7% IsiXhosa and 15% English.
