The monastery Termunten (Movement Erna, Menterne, Menterwolde, Kampwoude) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Netherlands . It was between Termunten and Woldendorp in the large municipality of Delfzijl in the province of Groningen at the northwest end of the Dollart .

history

Menterna Monastery was founded in 1247 as a Benedictine double monastery and in 1259, when the double monastery was dissolved (the nuns moved to Midwolde Monastery ) , it was taken over by the Cistercian order as a subsidiary of Aduard Monastery , a foundation of Klaarkamp Monastery . Due to increasing humidity, the monastery was moved to Termunten in 1299. Abbot Boyng was appointed visitor to the Frisian Cistercians several times after 1408. Also in 1423 the General Chapter asked the Prelate of Menterna, together with the abbot of the Kamp monastery, to convene the abbots of the dioceses of Cologne and Mainz every year under threat of religious penalties. The monastery was devastated by the Wassergeusen and probably came to an end towards the end of the 16th century (the year 1569 is given). At the beginning of the 16th century, Menterwolde sank into the floods after two dike breaches. In 1975 the gate building of the monastery was found. The Grijze Monnikenklooster farm is now on the monastery grounds.
