Saint Perfectus (* in Córdoba ; † April 18, 850 ) was one of the martyrs of Córdoba . His martyrdom was recorded by Eulogius of Córdoba in the Memoriale sanctorum .

He was born in Cordoba in the time of the Moors . Perfectus was a monk and ordained priest. He served in the Basilica of Acisclus in Cordoba. Christians were mostly tolerated at this time.

According to legend, Perfectus 850 was asked by two Muslims which of the two prophets, Jesus or Mohammed , was the greater one. At first he refused to answer, but the two promised to protect him from reprisals. He told them in Arabic that Mohammend was a false prophet and immoral for seducing the mother of his adopted son ( Quran 33:37). The Muslims initially kept their word, but a few days later they had Perfectus arrested.

Perfectus was sentenced to death by an Islamic court for blasphemy and was beheaded on April 18, 850. In his last words he is said to have praised Jesus and condemned Mohammed and his Koran.

His martyrdom was one of the first during the persecution of Christians , which began in 850 under Abd ar-Rahman II and was continued under his successor Muhammad I and lasted until 960.

His Catholic feast day is April 18th.
