Eulogius of Córdoba (Spanish Eulogio ; * before 819 in the emirate of Córdoba ; † March 11, 859 in Córdoba ) was a priest who worked at the time of the Umayyads . He described the life and suffering of the martyrs of Cordoba , whose movement he tried to popularize, and is venerated with them as martyrs and saints in the Roman Catholic Church . His feast day is March 11th .

Live and act

During the rule of the emir Abd ar-Rahman II (822-852) of Cordoba , there were Christians who neither assimilated ( Mozarabers ) nor wanted to convert to Islam ( Muwalladun ). They also brought this up in the Muslim public, which was forbidden to those under dhimma status.

In 850 this group gathered around the priest Eulogius. The aim of this group was to publicly denigrate the Prophet Muhammad and Islam and to induce the Muwalladun to return to the bosom of the Church. They were aware that they were provoking their martyrdom and wanted to set an example for the Christians of Muslim Spain. As a result, some of them were actually executed.

In 858 Eulogius was elected Archbishop of Toledo , but the Moorish emir Muhammad I refused to confirm the election. Eulogius was eventually executed for the admission of a Moorish girl who had converted to Christianity - the Christian mission of Muslims was forbidden in Muslim Spain. After his martyrdom, the movement dissolved.
