Peter Urban (Author)

Peter Urban (born July 16, 1941 in Berlin ; † December 9, 2013 in Weidmoos ) was a German writer and translator .

Life

At the end of the 1950s, Peter Urban attended school in Schondorf am Ammersee. A teacher, Dr. Georg Reimann , introduced him to the Russian language. Urban studied Slavic , German and history at the universities in Würzburg and Belgrade . From 1966 to 1968 he worked as a publishing editor at Suhrkamp Verlag in Frankfurt . In 1969 he was one of the founders of the publishing house of the authors . From 1974 to 1977 he worked as a dramaturge for the radio play department of the West German Broadcasting Corporation . He then worked as managing director and editor in the publishing house of the authors. From 1989 onwards he was a freelance translator. Until 1989 he lived in Frankfurt am Main; then in Weidmoos, a small village that belongs to the municipality of Grebenhain in the Vogelsbergkreis .

He wrote reviews and essays on authors of the Slavic languages . He also worked as an editor, but above all he was a translator. He translated the complete works of Anton Chekhov ; It was his German versions of Chekhov's dramas that made this central figure in Russian literature accessible to the German-speaking audience. He has also translated a large number of other authors from Russian, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian and Czech.

Urban received the following awards: 1974 the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize of the German Academy for Language and Poetry , 1980 the Helmut M Braem Prize , 1984 the Hessian Culture Prize , 2000 the recognition prize for the Leipzig Book Prize , 2003 the City of Münster Prize for European poetry , 2003 the Jane Scatcherd Prize from the Heinrich Maria Ledig Rowohlt Foundation and in 2008 the Ivan Turgenev Prize from the Boris Yeltsin Foundation. In 1998 the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Regensburg awarded him the title of Honorary Doctor of Philosophy.

Urban was a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts and the German Academy for Language and Poetry . His estate was donated to the German Literature Archive in Marbach .
