The Trizay Monastery (Sancta Maria de Vado; Trisay, Trisagium) is a former Cistercian abbey in what is now Bournezeau (formerly St-Vincent-Puymaufrais ) in the Vendée department , Pays de la Loire region , France . It was about 18 kilometers north of Luçon and 6 km northwest of Sainte-Hermine , at a ford across the Lay , near the road D 948 and the motorway A 83. The monastery does not involve the Benedictine abbey of Trizay in Saintonge confused become.

history

The monastery, which was founded by Hervé de Mareuil as a subsidiary of the Primary Abbey of Pontigny in 1137 (according to other information, not until 1145) founded the subsidiary of Notre-Dame-de-Ré (Les Châteliers) together with L'Étoile in 1156 . Otherwise little is known about the history of Trizay Monastery, which owned a few grangies but fell into the future , until the middle of the 16th century. It was set on fire in 1568, and it did not recover properly from this blow, probably also due to inadequate equipment and the indifference of the commander's abbots. In the French Revolution , when it was dissolved, there were only five monks left.

Plant and buildings

The abbey church has been converted into a warehouse. The endangered choir is flat and closed and the transepts are gone. Only the outer walls of the closed buildings are still standing. The chapter house has lost its vaults. Refectory and kitchen are integrated into one residential building. The cloister has disappeared.
