The Varennes Monastery (Varenae) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Fougerolles in the Indre department , Center-Val de Loire region , in France . It was about 10 km west of La Châtre and 9 km east of Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre on the Gourdon River .

history

The monastery was founded in 1148 by Prince Ebbe II of Déols on the ruins of an older Benedictine settlement. It was a daughter house of Vauluisant Abbey from the filiation of Cîteaux . It seems to have survived the crisis of the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion without major damage. It was dissolved in the French Revolution and then used for agriculture. From 1901 to 1920 it was a meeting place for various artists and writers such as André Maurois and Roger Martin du Gard .
