Wahlshausen Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wahlshausen monastery (also: Walshausen ) was a monastery from 1142 to 1527, first of the Benedictine nuns , from 1293 of the Cistercians and from 1310 of the Cistercians in Wilhelmshausen , municipality of Fuldatal , in Hesse .

history

The Bishop of Mainz, Gerhard II von Eppstein , placed the nunnery, which was built between 1142 and 1150, under the supervision of Hardehausen Monastery in 1293 . In 1310 the monastery was converted into a Cistercian priory with the help of Riddagshausen Monastery , which was dissolved by Landgrave Philipp in 1527 , but served as a refuge for monks and nuns until 1570. From 1572, Landgrave Wilhelm IV converted the monastery into the village of Wilhelmshausen named after him. Today only the Protestant parish church "Marienbasilika", which emerged from the Romanesque monastery church, is left of the monastery (recently renovated).
