Knight Online is a client-based MMORPG from the South Korean developer Mgame (until 2003 Wizgate ) that was launched for the first time in 2003 . It takes place in the fictional medieval world Carnac, on which the two peoples El Morad and Karus find themselves in an endless war . According to the operator, more than 4 million players are registered for the English language version and there are almost 300,000 players online at the same time. Playing server against server, on the order of hundreds of players, was previously unknown and is unique. In 2014, the number of 10 million players (subscriptions) was officially exceeded, with just under 17 million players due to the free-to-play system. The main set of players is in the Asian and Turkish regions.

providers

The title has been licensed by various providers worldwide and was or is being offered in localized versions.

  • South Korea: The developer Mgame is also the operator.
  • China: Sohu , a Chinese search engine / internet portal operator, expanded with the title into the field of MMOGs . The license agreement with the developer Wizgate took place in November 2002. After a beta phase, commercial gaming began at the end of the second quarter of 2003. The game was only moderately successful on the Chinese market and gaming operations were discontinued at the end of 2006.
  • Malaysia: Terra ICT (renamed eGames in 2005 ) launched an open beta test in January 2004. Commercial launch was in July 2004.
  • Japan: The provider is Gonzo Rossi , a sister company of GONZO under the umbrella of the GDH Group. Until 2005 the provider was called Warp Online .
  • North America / worldwide: K2 networks started commercial gaming on US servers in December 2004. In October 2005, 2 million registered and 40,000 simultaneously active players were reported.

Backstory

Logos, the God of all things, creates the world Carnac and the people, but he forgets part of his energy from which pathos arises. This, driven by vengeance and hatred, brings death into the world, in order to restore balance, Akara, the goddess of life, arises. Because of the destruction pathos brings to Carnac, Akara decides to create a new god: Cypher. With his help she wants to finally defeat pathos. But the fight ends unexpectedly in the merging of the two gods. The land is changing and becoming toxic and uninhabitable. People take the initiative and try to destroy the calamity they see in the god Pathos-Cypher. The venture is successful and, with the help of God's Logos, they are able to kill Pathos-Cypher. But through one last curse of God the orcs arise, and there is an endless war between orcs and humans. (The names are also the different server names)

Game flow

The player chooses one of the two sides, either the human kingdom El Morad or the orc tribes Karus. As in other MMORPGs, the player can choose between 4 classes: magician , warrior , priest or thief. They have different skills and opportunities for further development.

The game is controlled with the mouse and the keyboard, so you move your character and interact with the world. To develop your character further, you kill NPC monsters or solve quests (tasks), these give experience points , after a certain number the character moves up to a new level . As the level rises, the character gets better and more skills. The higher the level, the more experience points are required. From level 60 it is possible for the player to do a so-called master quest. This gives him new skills and can advance to a new armor class. The current maximum of the game is level 83, which has been increased by 3 levels with the new version. The new version was published on October 22, 2008.

Killed NPC monsters drop items; these can be used, sold or expanded (upgrade). The player has the possibility of joining forces with other players in a group of 2–8 men, which has the advantage that it gives you more experience points.

PvP

The main part of the game is PvP , i.e. the battle between players and players. The fight takes place between the two factions El Morad and Karus. The so-called PvP is about eliminating players from the opposing faction. National Points are awarded for each "eliminated" opponent.
Each faction has its own list of the best players. They receive a special symbol in front of their name and can pick up a certain amount of Noah (play money) from an NPC once a day . There is also a list of the 5 best clans of each faction, who are honored with a flag of their clan symbol in their own capital and the common capital (Moradon). The greatest honor, however, is to be one of the best 5 clans overall. These clans receive a gold bracelet, which is equipped with fire.
Twice a week there is a big fight for a castle in which every clan from grade 3 can participate. The clan that owns this castle has the right to raise taxes and thus claim the profit for themselves. In this type of PvP, mass battles with hundreds of players take place against each other, a concept that differs from the instantaneous PvP known from other MMORPGs such as WoW .
Sometimes there are fights server against server, which can then be followed via a live stream. In May 2007 a world championship took place in which the best 300 players on one server competed against other servers. (USKO vs. JAPKO), (CNKO vs. KOKO) The winner in the end was JAPKO, the Japanese Knight Online. That could also be because this game is more advanced there.

reception

The game is praised for its intuitive controls, its clear interface and its manageable level of difficulty. In addition, the PvP system is one of the most mature of all. It is possible for the player to do more damage by using different key combinations. The key combination is often used: rr + Skill. This first causes an opponent to do basic damage and then the damage caused by the skill. So it is not only necessary to press the skill, but also to prove that you are particularly good at using the various key combinations. There are other keyboard shortcuts too, but in the knockout world, one arguing which is the most effective. Other combos: wr + Skill, sr + Skill, e + Skill, wr + sr + Skill. However, the cumbersome installation , the often very long leveling of a character, the sometimes not so good help of the "customer support" and the sometimes slow actions against the many cheaters and gold farmers at certain times are criticized.
