Knights of Marshall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nobel Order of Knights and Ladies of Marshall (short form: Knights of Marshall , German: Venerable Order of Knights and Ladies of Marshall ) is a Roman Catholic lay order in the form of a "knightly brotherhood ". It was founded in 1926 and is now spread all over Ghana , in all dioceses . The order is divided into Knights of Marshall (KM) and Ladies of Marshall (LM) and is the sponsor of a Catholic non-governmental organization (NGO). The lay order is supported by the Bishops' Conference in Ghana and is affiliated with the International Alliance of Catholic Knights .

history

In 1925 several men joined together in a community in the parish of St. Paul, in the former Sekondi diocese . They wanted to initiate a “ Catholic Action ” with like-minded Catholics and conduct an apostolic-social work. To this end, they founded the “Association of Charity” (community of charity ) and wanted to be open to everyone. After gaining knowledge of the American Brotherhood of the Knights of Columbus , they took this association of believers as their guiding principle. The first initiators of the West African Brotherhood were monks J. Brookman-Amissah and JA Kwesi-Aaba. At the founding meeting on November 18, 1926, 13 founding members were present. As their spiritual father they chose Sir James Marshall , a Scottish lay Catholic who had rendered outstanding services to the Catholic Church in West Africa . On May 1, 1929, the order received the episcopal approbation, with which the statute was approved.

organization

The order is organized according to the model of the Columbus Knights and has its headquarters in Sekondi-Takoradi . At the last annual general meeting in 2013, they elected their current President (Supreme Knight). The order is divided into local groups (councils) that work in the parishes ; in supraregional provincial councils (provincial courts) that work at the diocesan level ; and the highest body is the National Council. The councils and courts are divided into juniors and seniors (both male and female), with a total of 108 senior councils in 91 courts and 68 junior councils / courts. The order publishes the magazine "Die Brücke". It has offices in Liberia , Benin and Togo .

membership

Any practicing Catholic Christian between the ages of 18 and 60 can become a member. A prerequisite is a responsible Christian life, practical work in the community and regular participation in the Eucharist . The candidate must submit a written application for admission in which he names at least two guarantors . The Order Secretariat checks the information and sends the candidate a health form. The doctor working for the order or an authorized pastor confirms the information and makes a recommendation. An admission committee ultimately decides on the application. After a positive decision, the Secretariat will inform the candidate of this decision, who will then be accepted into the Order in a solemn ceremony .

Marshallan Relief & Development Service (MAREDES)

In 2011 the annual general meeting decided to found a non-governmental organization. With MAREDES, an organization was created with which social tasks can be better bundled and help can be used more effectively.

Naming

The name "Knights of Marshall" goes back to Sir James Marshall (1829–1889). He was initially a clergyman in the Anglican Church . In 1857 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church, but without becoming a Catholic priest . He worked for the Society of Africa Missions (SAM) and took on several tasks on their behalf. He became a lawyer and was ultimately Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Gold Coast , now Ghana, from 1880 to 1882 . Marshall was very committed to the development of the Catholic Church there and received national recognition. In his honor, who began to rebuild after the collapse of the Catholic Church in West Africa - around the middle of the 17th century - the lay order took over his name.
