The tuberous valerian ( Valeriana tuberosa ) is a species of plant from the subfamily of the valerian family (Valerianoideae). It is native from the Mediterranean to Western Asia.

description

The tuberous valerian is an unbranched, upright, herbaceous plant that can reach a size of up to 70 centimeters. Runners are missing, the rhizome is bulbous and thick. The stem axis is usually bald, rarely hairy at the base and at the nodes .

The leaves are usually glabrous or with short hairs on the edge, only rarely hairy on the leaf surface. The leaves on the lower part of the plant and at the base of the stem are simple and stalked, the petiole is 10 to 40 (rarely 5 to 45) millimeters long, the leaf blade 20 to 70 (10 to 80) millimeters long and 10 to 50 (5 to 60 ) Millimeters wide, elliptical, oblong-round lanceolate to oblong-round inverted-egg-shaped.

The approximately sessile or stalked middle to upper leaves are pinnate or pinnate with two to six pairs of pinnate leaves. The petiole is 8 to 25 (2 to 30) millimeters long, the blade 25 to 55 (15 to 65) millimeters long and 8 to 20 (rarely from 5) millimeters wide. The individual feathers are linear, 6 to 25 (4 to 34) millimeters long and 3 to 8 (1 to 10) millimeters wide.

The glandular hairy inflorescence is covered with lanceolate-awl-shaped, simple and bare bracts and triangular-lanceolate, simple, weakly glandular hairy pre-leaves .

The red crown measures 5 to 7.2 (4 to 8) millimeters and is bald on the outside, the inner tube is hairy, the outer corolla lobes measure 1.2 to 2 (1 to 2.3) millimeters, the inner 0.9 up to 1.8 (0.6 to 2) millimeters. The anthers are 0.8 to 1.1 millimeters long, the fruits are egg-shaped achenes that are 2.7 to 3.9 (2.3 to 4.5) millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

distribution

The species is native from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus , to West Asia and North Africa and occurs at altitudes of 300 to 2350 meters, preferably on limestone in clearings of holm oak and Kermes oak forests , among other things .
