Knut Wittenbecher (born September 13, 1939 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association. He played there for SC Aufbau Magdeburg , SC Empor Rostock and Lok Stendal .

Wittenbecher's first station in the GDR Oberliga was SC Aufbau Magdeburg. At the age of 20 he was part of the squad of the league promoter in 1960, but was not a regular player. When he left Magdeburg after the 1961/62 season, he had been used 19 times in the 65 point games of the two seasons and had only scored two goals as a regular striker.

In the summer of 1962 he was included in the league squad of runner-up SC Empor Rostock. Together with Harald Nitze , who had come from Unity Greifswald , he was planned as the future successor of the 30-year-old center forward Rolf Leeb . On the first day of the 1962/63 season coach Walter Fritzsch Nitze gave priority, but from the second day of the game Wittenbecher was Rostock's center forward. He was in this position without a break until matchday 12, but after the winter break he was only used once. This time he had a good hit rate with eight goals in twelve games and was Rostock's second-best goalscorer at the end of the season.

After only one year Wittenbecher left Rostock again and joined the league promoted Lok Stendal for the 1963/64 season. Here, however, Gerd Backhaus was firmly established as a center forward, so that Wittenbecher did not join the team until matchday 8, which had to be changed due to the failure of Kurt Liebrecht . Against his old club construction Magdeburg, he played his second and last league point game for Lok Stendal, this time as a right winger. With only two league games and goalless, Wittenbecher also parted ways with Stendal after a year.

It was also the farewell to the GDR Oberliga, in which he had played a total of 33 point games and scored ten goals. His next stations were the second division ASG Vorwärts Neubrandenburg (1964/65), the third-class district division Vorwärts Potsdam and until 1973 the second team from Chemie Leipzig, which played in the district league . Wittenbecher ended his career as an active football player in the fourth-class team of BSG Motor in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg .
