Ko e Iki he Lagi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ko e Iki he Lagi (German "The Lord in Heaven") is the national anthem of the Pacific island state of Niue .

history

During Niue's history as a New Zealand territory, Niue's national anthem was New Zealand's God Defend New Zealand . " God Save the Queen " was also used and is still played today as New Zealand's royal anthem. “Ko e Iki he Lagi” was written before 1970. It is not known who wrote the hymn, but it was composed by Sioeli Fusikata. When it was written in 1963, it was a familiar melody on Niue. During the South Pacific Games , Niue used the flag of New Zealand as the flag of Niues. Niue used Ko e Iki he Lagi as their anthem instead of God Defend New Zealand because the organizers had requested that "identifying tunes" be used to represent the countries. Niue lost every elimination, so Ko e Iki he Lagi could not be played.

In 1974, the same year in which the construct of free association with New Zealand was set in motion, Ko e Iki he Lagi became official as Niues' national anthem. "God Save the Queen" was saved as Niues' royal hymn.
