Koca Sinan Pascha (also Sinan Pascha ; * 1512 ; † April 3, 1596 ) was a pasha , general and statesman of the Ottoman Empire of Albanian origin.

Life

Sinan came from Topojan in what is now northern Albania and rose steadily in the service of the Sultan . He was appointed governor of Egypt in 1569 and was claimed with the conquest of Yemen until 1571 . In 1574 he commanded the great campaign against Tunis , which was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire despite the defense by Spanish and Italian garrisons. In 1580 Sinan commanded the army against the Persian Safavid Empire and was appointed grand vizier, but fell from grace and was exiled the following year. He then became governor of Damascus . After the great revolt of the Janissaries in 1589, he became Grand Vizier a second time. The Janissary Rebellion of 1591 resulted in his dismissal, but in 1593 he was recalled again to become Grand Vizier a third time. In the same year he commanded the Ottoman army against the Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary and triggered the Long Turkish War with this advance . Despite his victories, he was in February 1595, shortly after the accession to the throne of Mehmed III. , released and exiled to Malkara . In August he was back in power and took part in the campaign in Wallachia . The unfortunate course of this enterprise, which culminated in the case of the Gran Fortress , once more disgraced him and his official seal was revoked (November 19). The death of his successor, Lala Mehmed, three days later was seen as a sign from Heaven, and Sinan became Grand Vizier a fifth time. He died at the age of 84.

His buildings include the pearl kiosk on the Bosporus, several buildings in Thessaloniki and Belgrade, and mosques, including a mosque in Damascus and one in Kosovar Kachanik .
