Koingnaas is a place near the South African Atlantic coast in the local community of Kamiesberg in the Namakwa district . In 2011 it had 105 inhabitants with 61 households.

description

Koingnaas was built as a mining site, in the western and southern surroundings of which diamonds occur and open-cast mining areas exist. It is therefore located in a protected zone that has special rules regarding access and residence. The settlement consists of two separate residential areas.

Between 2007 and 2009, the place lost many inhabitants because De Beers had initially reduced its mining activities due to a decline in finds and finally stopped in 2008. When mining still existed on a large scale, the use of water and electricity was free for the residents of the place and they could also live here rent-free. Prior to 1975, they were also driven to work, shopping, or company-sponsored leisure activities. Since 2014 another company has renewed diamond mining activities.

The mining company supplies the neighboring village of Hondeklipbaai with water, as it is periodically exposed to extreme water scarcity.

In order to improve the employment opportunities, the development of offers according to criteria of gentle tourism is planned in association with Kleinzee from the neighboring municipality and with Hondeklipbaai . A link with the national park is sought.

traffic

Koingnaas can be reached by land via the network of secondary roads near Garies from the national road N7 and from the direction of Kleinzee parallel to the coast. There is also an unpaved country road through the Namaqua National Park over the Messelpad and Wildeperdehoek mountain passes , which crosses the mostly dry valley of the Buffels River and south of Springbok also leads to the N7. There is a small airport on the northern edge of the town.
