Hondeklipbaai ( English Hondeklip Bay ) is a fishing village on the South African Atlantic coast in the local community of Kamiesberg in the Namakwa district . In 2011 it had 543 inhabitants with 189 households.

description

Hondeklipbaai is a small fishing port in the bay of the same name and is located west of the Namaqua National Park in the coastal plain shaped by dunes. The place was named after a singular rock that resembled a sitting dog. However, a lightning strike blew off part of the rock and therefore greatly changed the original visual impression.

history

Originally, the port of Hondeklipbaai was used to ship copper ores from the mines at Springbok , Nababeep and Okiep , which were delivered here by ox wagon. In 1852 an English ship took the ore in the port for the first time and brought it to Wales . The stormy seas and persistent fog made coastal navigation very difficult. That is why the loading of the copper ores transported by road was later relocated to the port of Port Nolloth, which is less risky.

The town was proclaimed as a municipality with its own administration in 1862.

After the copper boom was over, a factory was built in 1925 to process lobsters (crayfish) and fish. This worked until 1997 and had to close due to overfishing in the nearby sea area.

Attractions

There is a lighthouse north of the village . Its light signal lasts 11 nautical miles and is given three times every 15 seconds. On the coast south of the village lies the wreck of the Aristea , which ran aground here in 1945.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2007 the University of Stellenbosch started an aquaculture project in the town to investigate the possibilities of breeding abalones .

In order to improve employment opportunities, the development of offers based on criteria of gentle tourism is planned in association with Kleinzee and Koingnaas . A link with the Namaqua National Park is sought.

The coastal land north and south of Hondeklipbaai has mining rights for diamonds because the alluvial sand deposits contain economically interesting diamond concentrations . However, the location is outside the defined mining zones. From an economic point of view, Hondeklipbaai is hardly affected by diamond mining and its main focus is on fishing .

Large storage tanks were set up here to supply drinking water and the water required was delivered by tanker. The mining operation around Koingnaas now supplies Hondeklipbaai with water, as its residents are exposed to periodic, extreme water shortages.

traffic

Hondeklipbaai can be reached by land via the network of secondary roads from the direction of Kleinzee via Koingnaas and from the national road N7 with a turnoff at Garies . There is a small airport in Koingnaas.
