Kokoloko is a film drama directed by Gerardo Naranjo that was first made available online to Tribeca Film Festival participants on April 15, 2020.
action
The young Marisol lives with her possessive and aggressive cousin Mauro and her passionate but somewhat older and lazy lover Mundo in the small coastal community of Kokoloko on the rocky Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The streetscape of the rural community is characterized by the constant presence of gangs and guerrilla fighters.
Marisol suffers from the fact that Mauro, who runs a small business, considers her his property. She is also annoyed by the apathy and unreliability of her lover Mundo. He works for Mauro and doesn't manage to assert himself against him. Mundo takes part in guerrilla street fighting and supports the group leader in his plans to block a main road. Marisol dreams of participating in street fighting like Mauro, but also longs for her personal freedom.
When Mundo has to flee Kokoloko and Marisol herself is held captive by her cousin, they now have a purely digital relationship instead of a previously physical one. Your communication takes place via text and voicemail and video messages. Even if this happens only sporadically and is frustrating for both of them, it can comfort her a little about their separation. Your longing for the other remains strong despite the spatial distance.
