The St. Benedict College in Salzburg is the study house of the German-speaking Benedictines in Salzburg ; The Austrian Benedictine Congregation is responsible for this .

history

In memory of the Benedictine University in Salzburg, the Archabbot of St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, Petrus Klotz , tried to establish a Catholic university . In 1926 this led to the foundation of the Benedictine preparatory college, the St. Benedict College. This achievement, which subsequently led to the re-establishment of the University of Salzburg , was honored by the elevation of the St. Peter monastery to an archabbey in 1927. In 1938/1939 the clergy had to leave the house. Studies were relocated to the Seitenstetten Abbey , but stopped in 1941 due to personnel problems. It was not until 1946 that studies could be resumed.

The building

The building of the college was erected in 1925/1926 in the design language of the 1920s. The house was inaugurated on May 1, 1926 with the participation of the highest ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries. The original design by Salzburg's city architect Franz Wagner was heavily revised by the internationally known architect Peter Behrens , who was working in Berlin and Vienna at the time . The frescoes on the outside of the house are by Anton Faistauer and show the mercy seat of the Trinity and the miraculous image of Maria Plain . The foyer is interesting , with a larger than life crucifix made of linden wood by the artist Jakob Adlhart . It caused a sensation in 1925, at the time of its creation. The massive ceiling beams adorn coat of arms of the former Salzburg confederation merged abbeys of Germany , the Switzerland and Austria , as well as the coat of arms and monograms of supporters .

present

Today as then, the St. Benedict College serves religious people from German-speaking countries and beyond as a place of residence, prayer and study. A wide variety of fields of study are completed at the Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg and the Mozarteum University . It is also possible for laypeople to live in the college. The college community is only in Salzburg while studying - during the lecture-free periods or on public holidays, the religious return to their home monasteries.

In the years 2008 to 2010 the building was completely renovated. Since the number of clergy and lay people is much smaller than was the case when it was founded, rooms could be merged. As a result, the residents now have significantly more space and space has been created for wet cells in the rooms.
