history

Since the 18th century at the latest, a tar stove can be found on the site of the later living space , which used the rich tree population in the area. In the late 19th century, peat mining began a little below the residential area . That was probably the reason for damming the breeze above it. The resulting Briesesee quickly became an excursion destination. There was a bathing establishment on the lake since the beginning of the 20th century , and several restaurants were operated. Little by little, around a dozen residential and other permanent buildings were built. The settlement was called "Kolonie Briese".

After the Second World War , the colony slowly lost its importance. The wooden buildings of the bathing establishment gradually fell into disrepair and were completely demolished in the 1990s. Briese was the venue for the "Birch Festival" of the municipality of Birkenwerder several times.

After the " turning point " in the GDR , the consumer sales point and the children's holiday camp were given up. The last restaurant, Briesekrug , was also closed, and at least the kiosk that once belonged to the restaurant is now operating again under this name.
