Hendrik Thoma

Hendrik Thoma (born October 10, 1967 in Gütersloh ) is a German sommelier , wine critic , author and television presenter .

Life

Thoma completed an apprenticeship as a chef at the Parkhotel Gütersloh between 1985 and 1988 . He then worked as a chef in upscale gastronomy (including Saucier at Landhaus Scherrer , Hamburg). A trainee period at Auberge Du Soleil in Rutherford, California, was followed in 1993 by an internship at the Johannishof winery in Johannisberg (Geisenheim) . After further training at the hotel management school in Heidelberg, he passed the state-certified sommelier examination in 1994, including being awarded the qualification as a trainer . In the following two years he was head sommelier at the Hotel Intercontinental in Leipzig . In 1995 he moved to the five-star Hotel Louis C. Jacob in Hamburg, where he worked until 2007 as the head sommelier of the hotel restaurant, which was awarded a Michelin star .

In 1999, after five years of preparation, Thoma passed the Master Sommelier exam at the Court of Master Sommeliers in London. Since then he has been one of currently three Master Sommeliers in Germany. Starting in 2007, Thoma gained experience as Head of Wine at Metro AG Düsseldorf.

Hendrik Thoma has appeared in numerous television programs as a presenter or expert. Thoma worked as a columnist for Welt am Sonntag , Playboy , Mixology , Living at home and AHGZ , and he also writes in Der Feinschmecker . Thoma has been self-employed since 2009 and works as a consultant in the wine and catering industry. He has also been running the independent video blog Wein am Limit since January 2012 .

Thoma is married, has a daughter and lives with his family in Hamburg .

Thoma has been awarded the title “Sommelier of the Year” three times and the Louis C. Jacob's wine list was awarded the “Best of Award of Excellence” by the American wine magazine Wine Spectator .
