The colony in Augsburg-Göggingen , formerly Workers Colony I or Old Colony , is a former workers' settlement of the "Göggingen twisting and sewing thread factory" ( ZNFG for short ) in the Göggingen district of Augsburg . The self-contained settlement with a total of nine houses is located between Fabrikstrasse and Butzstrasse.

history

In 1855 Eusebius Schiffmacher founded a yarn twisting mill in Augsburg, of which Wilhelm Butz became a partner six years later . The latter came from an old line of linen weavers and had the capital and the necessary experience . In 1863 the "Eusebius Schiffmacher & Comp." Factory with 87 employees moved to Göggingen :

The brand name 'GÖGGINGER' was a world-wide known label, and it was number 1 on the entire European mainland .

In 1871 the company founder withdrew from the management for health reasons. In the period that followed, the factory was converted into a joint stock company, which was one of the largest local employers. For the employees of the ZNFG, a settlement consisting of nine houses was built between 1873 and 1877 in the immediate vicinity of their place of work, called Colony I. These were two-storey pitched roof buildings with corner pilasters . Colony II was built in 1887, consisting of eleven workers' houses and a “toddler school”. 48 large families found accommodation in the then ultra-modern and very communicative settlement (with bath / wash house and fire station), which formed a closed unit.

In 1993 the colony was placed under a preservation order and the intended demolition was prevented. The renovation of the houses began a year later. A total of six residential units per house were built as condominiums. The design of the outdoor facilities was also carried out in its original form from the early days. Great emphasis was placed on maintaining the formerly closed unit of the two colonies.
