Kombinat aluminijuma AD Podgorica (abbreviation KAP ) was an aluminum manufacturer based in Podgorica . Since the bankruptcy in October 2013, a legal dispute has been going on between the former co-owners CEAC , a company of Oleg Deripaska , and the Montenegrin government. The insolvency administrator had sold the assets of the combine to Uniprom .

history

In 1968 it was decided to establish an aluminum plant in Podgorica. The former French industrial group Pechiney played a key role in the implementation and financing of this project . Construction of the plant began the following year and production began in 1971. The production capacity at the start of production was 50,000 tons of aluminum per year and was already reached in 1973, after which the company was expanded and increased to an annual volume of 200,000 tons of aluminum.

In 1976 the company acquired a lime plant in Spuž, a small town near Danilovgrad in Montenegro. In the following years, the aluminum plant was expanded again and in 1983 production began in a new plant and in 1984 a new forge went into operation.

In the 1980s, KAP continued to invest in new production facilities and in 1986 founded the Aluminum Research and Development Institute with the help of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the United Nations Development Program .

In 2004 the company sold the lime works in Spuž. In the following year, the Central European Aluminum Company , a subsidiary of the Russian En + , acquired the majority of the shares in KAP. As a result of the takeover, the new majority owner carried out modernization measures with a volume of several million euros.
