The command building for Colonel Bilgeri (or Bilgeri barracks for short ) is a barracks complex of the Austrian Armed Forces in the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz . The barracks is the headquarters of the Vorarlberg military command, the military music Vorarlberg and the command of the militia -Jägerbataillons Vorarlberg. The military building is named after Georg Bilgeri , a native of Bregenz and a pioneer of alpine skiing (1873–1934). The current commander on site is the Vorarlberg military commander, Brigadier Gunther Hessel .

The barracks buildings are located directly to the east of Vorarlberger Straße (L 190), which in the Bregenz city area is also known as Reichsstraße. Opposite the barracks the railway line runs between Bregenz and Lindau, and then the lake promenade of Lake Constance follows to the west . A few meters from the barracks is also today's Bregenz harbor and the ÖBB train stop Bregenz-Hafen.

history

The Bregenz barracks around 1900

As early as 1717, Bregenz became a garrison town with the construction of barracks. However, these barracks were not yet at the current location. In 1825, not far from the later barracks site, a bathhouse was built in Lake Constance, which was used as a military swimming school for the garrison that existed in Bregenz at that time. This building - which is no longer used by the military - still exists today and is popularly referred to as "Mili".

The buildings of today's command building for Colonel Bilgeri were erected in 1863, i.e. already during the Danube Monarchy . Initially, parts of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 59 were housed in the barracks .

During the Second World War , various units of the German Wehrmacht were stationed in the Bregenz barracks - including the Gebirgs-Kraftfahrabteilung 18. After the end of the Second World War, various units of the French army were billeted in Bregenz from May 1945 to November 1953. Today the barracks buildings house the Vorarlberg military command, its pioneer train, the Vorarlberg military band and the command facilities of the Vorarlberg hunter battalion militia group. The entire barracks is because of his age under monument protection .
