In the 2009 local elections , there was a turnout of 59.8%.

For the 2014 municipal elections , Wermelskirchen has 20 electoral districts. Among other things, the Citizens' Forum in Wermelskirchen and, for the first time, a list of alternatives for Germany . There was a breakdown: The voting notifications for European and local elections were delivered by Deutsche Post to the Wermelskirchen eligible voters more than a week late.

The mayor is Eric Weik (FDP).
