The municipal elections in Bergisch Gladbach take place every five years. The current urban area of Bergisch Gladbach was created in 1975 by merging the two independent cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg, which were independent until the end of 1974 . The former districts of Immekeppel and Untereschbach were ceded to the city of Overath and Dürscheid to the municipality of Kürten . The Schildgen district was added by the Odenthal community . The Cologne Act was the main legal basis . Bergisch Gladbach has been a big city since 1977 . The city is part of the Rheinisch-Bergisch district . The city council has 62 seats.

In the elections for the city ​​council , the CDU , the SPD , the FDP , Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen (before 1990: Die Grünen ), the citizens for Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg ( BfBB for short ), the KIDitiative and the Die Linke ( previously: Left Party ).

In 1999 Maria Theresia Opladen (CDU) became mayor.

The turnout in the municipal elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2004 was 56.0% in Bergisch Gladbach, and 56.9% in 2009. Klaus Ort (SPD) became mayor.

The CDU became the strongest parliamentary group in 2009. She also provided the mayor. The faction Citizens for Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg (BfBB) dissolved in the following period as early as 2009, two former BfBB council members formed their own FWG faction , and the third member joined the Left Party. This was renamed Die Linke / BfBB . This resulted in eight parliamentary groups.

In the municipal elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2014 , the following groups apply for the council election in Bergisch Gladbach: CDU, SPD, Greens, FDP, GL Citizens' Party , Alternative for Germany , Demokrative14 (formerly Kiditiative, reinforced by pirates), Citizens for Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg, The Left and the Citizens' Movement pro NRW (only 13 of 26 electoral districts covered). Twelve candidates from pro NRW were not admitted by the election committee, partly due to formal errors, some people did not even know that they had been nominated; all other groups nominated candidates for all 26 constituencies.

In the elections for the Integration Council in 2014 (from April 28, 2014), the international list, the democratic list and three individual applicants from the GL Citizens' Party took part. Of the 13,080 eligible voters, 1,490 took part in the election.
