Konca Kuriş

Konca Kuriş (born in Mersin in 1962 ; died in Meram in 1998 or 1999 ) was a Muslim feminist. She was murdered by members of the Kurdish Hezbollah .

Life

Kuriş's family came from Mersin. Her father was a foreman in an ironworks, her mother was a housewife. The family name was Genç. Kuriş had a sister and two brothers. Konca is described as a restless and intelligent child. She attended elementary school. She dropped out of middle school after two years. She married Orhan Kuriş, whom she fell in love with at the age of 16.

Konca and Orhan ran a textile business together. The couple had five children. Until 1988 Konca was orientated towards the West and Kemal. Then in 1988 she joined Hezbollah, with whom she had come into contact through neighbors. Kuriş later separated from the organization and in the meantime represented positions of al-Qurʾāniyya , a denomination that rejects hadith and religious authorities and relies exclusively on the Koran. She studied faith on her own. Her topic was the identity and equality of Muslim women. From 1995, she received various threats, according to her son. Her modernist theses and the fact that she was a woman and wore a headscarf aroused interest in her, although similar positions had been formulated by, for example, Yaşar Nuri Öztürk . The local newspaper Yeni Yüzyıl reported extensively on Kuriş 'positions and described her for the first time as an Islamic feminist. Kuriş was also a guest on television channels. This particularly contributed to their notoriety.

Kidnapping and murder

Konca Kuriş was kidnapped at gunpoint in front of her house on July 16, 1998 and found after 555 days on June 20, 1999, in concrete in the basement of a house in Meram, Konya Province . She had been tortured while being held hostage. The bodies of several people cast in concrete were found with her. They were Enver Aktaş, Hüseyin Tuncer and Ali Arslan, who had tried to leave Hezbollah.

In a villa in Beykoz, when Hüseyin Velioğlu was killed and Edip Gümüş and Cemal Tutar were arrested, recordings of the 38th day of Kuriş's "interrogation" and their identity papers were discovered. The organization justified their execution as follows:

The enemy of Islam and secular feminist Konca Kuriş has violated God and the Koran in word and deed. As a result, she was kidnapped by Hezbollah fighters and interrogated in our bases. Konca Kuriş has acted according to the words of the official religion and instructions of the godless, secular Republic of Turkey. She was instrumentalized by Zionists. She has committed acts that were likely to sow doubt among Muslims and has been punished according to Sharia law.
