Denomination distribution of the inhabitants of the city of Mainz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The denomination distribution of the inhabitants of the city of Mainz reflects the development of the city in the religious aspect. But the historical development can also be clearly read from it.

Brief history

The city of Mainz was shaped by the Catholic origin of Christian life in it, which can be dated back to the 2nd century. Mainz has been documented as a bishopric since 340 ; in 780/782 it became the seat of an archbishop. There has been a Jewish community in the city since the second half of the 10th century at the latest. The Reformation, which took place in the 16th century, was initially barely able to gain a foothold in Mainz; there were only short-term Protestant residents during the incursions during the Schmalkaldic War and the Thirty Years' War . The situation changed only at the beginning of the 19th century; Since then, Protestantism has increased sharply, first in the form of the Protestant regional church , then later also in the form of various free churches . Other religious communities have also been added; In this context, particular reference should be made to Islam in its various forms, which has grown in importance since the second half of the 20th century.

For more information, see the history of religion in the main article about the city.
