De Hef ( Dutch Hefbrug , German lift bridge ; officially Koningshavenbrug ) is a former railway bridge in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ) on the main route Rotterdam - Roosendaal - Antwerp - Brussels . It leads from Noordereiland over the Koningshaven to the municipality of Feijenoord .
The bridge piers date from 1878. The center was originally designed as a swing bridge , but this turned out to be an obstacle for shipping. After the German ship Kandelfels rammed the swing bridge from its support pillar on November 2, 1918, the swing bridge had to be replaced by a lift bridge .
The lifting bridge comes from P. Joosting and was completed on October 31, 1927. A year later, Joris Ivens made an avant-garde film entitled De Brug across the bridge. Oscar van Dillen wrote the score for this silent film in 2007 with his String Quartet 2 .
Another serious accident occurred in 1978 when Nedlloyd Bahrain rammed the bridge on its first voyage from the Van der Giessen-De Noord shipyard and thus interrupted rail traffic for several weeks.
Since 1993, trains have been running from Rotterdam Centraal station to Rotterdam Zuid through the Willemsspoortunnel , so there is actually no longer any need for the bridge. However, it was left standing as an industrial monument after the population of Rotterdam protested against its demolition. As a memento, it should remain at the point where trains to the south once left the city center of Rotterdam. The bridge has been listed as a Rijksmonument since 2000 .
