Konna is a town and rural commune in the Cercle de Mopti in the Mopti region in Mali . The city is located 60 km northeast of Mopti on the eastern edge of the Niger floodplain . The main road N15, which connects Sévaré and Gao , turns eastwards directly south of Konna. The area of ​​the municipality of Konna measures around 838 km 2 and includes the city and 24 localities in the area. At the 2009 census there were 36,767 people in Konna.

The market, held in town on Thursdays, serves numerous settlements in the area.

North Mali conflict

In January 2013, fighting broke out in Konna between Islamists and units of the Malian government troops supported by French soldiers. The combined Malian and French troops recaptured the city on January 11 after the city had been taken by the Islamists the day before.

At the end of January 2013, details of the fighting became known: the Islamists took Konna by storm with around 100 all-terrain vehicles (pickups), overran the desolate Malian army and brutally massacred around 50 soldiers in the village.
