Dmitri Wassiljewitsch Schirkow ( Russian Дми́трий Васи́льевич Ширко́в , English transcription Dmitry Shirkov ; born March 3, 1928 in Moscow ; † January 23, 2016 in Dubna ) was a Russian theoretical physicist.

Life

Dmitri Schirkow studied physics at Lomonossow University with the degree in 1949. In 1954 he received his doctorate on neutron diffusion and in 1958 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) on renormalization group methods in quantum field theory . From 1942 he was at the Steklow Institute and from 1960 to 1969 at the Mathematical Institute of the Siberian Department of the Soviet Academy of Sciences at the University of Novosibirsk, where he headed the Institute for Theoretical Physics. From 1969 he was at JINR in Dubna and at the same time from 1972 professor at Lomonossow University, initially in the department of quantum statistics and field theory and from 1992 in the department of high energy physics. From 1993 to 1997 he headed the laboratory for theoretical physics at JINR, of which he became honorary director.

In 1970/71 he was visiting professor at Lund University . In 1960 he became a corresponding and in 1994 full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . He is also a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (1985) and the scientific society in Lund (1970).

He was an employee of Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Bogoljubow , with whom he worked on axiomatic quantum field theory in the 1950s and developed the renormalization group method around 1955 . In the 1960s he dealt with elastic and quasi-elastic scattering of hadrons at low energy. In 1969 he advocated a universal repulsive character of the strong interaction between hadrons at very short distances. He also did research on superconductivity.

From the 1970s onwards, he was primarily concerned with the renormalization group (RG) for the investigation of the asymptotic behavior of various quantum field theories. He investigated their role in various areas of theoretical physics and in 1988 introduced the concept of functional self-similarity based on the RG. In the 1990s he and Wladimir F. Kowalew developed a method to clarify the nature of the singularities in a broad class of boundary value problems in mathematical physics. Since 1996 he and IL Solowtsowim developed a method of analytical perturbation theory in quantum chromodynamics.

In the 1950s he was also in the Soviet atomic bomb project and nuclear energy project as a theorist.

Awards

Shirkov received the Red Banner of Labor twice (1954, 1967), the Lenin Prize in 1958 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1984 . In 2004 he received the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation and in the same year the Bogolyubov gold medal .
