Konrad Mommsen

Konrad Mommsen (born May 10, 1871 in Berlin , † November 4, 1946 ) was a German naval officer and fleet chief of the Reichsmarine .

Life

Mommsen was a son of the highly respected historian and Nobel laureate in literature Theodor Mommsen . He joined the Imperial Navy on April 10, 1891 . After his training and initial experience on board, he became the commander of several warships before and during the First World War . He led the small cruisers Condor (April 1912 to March 1914), Frauenlob (August 1914 to January 1915) and Pillau (January 1915 to April 1917), with which he took part in the Battle of the Skagerrak . On July 13, 1916, he was promoted to sea captain. In April 1917 he took over the great cruiser Von der Tann . In July 1918 he was transferred to the Reichsmarineamt , where he was head of the weapons department.

Promoted to Rear Admiral, Mommsen was Commander of the Naval Forces in the North Sea from April 1921 to April 1922 and then Chief of the Naval Command Office in the naval command. In 1924 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed Commander in Chief of the Naval Forces, from April 1, 1925 designated as the Fleet Commander. By 31 December 1927, he resigned under the ceremony character as Admiral from active service.

After the end of the Second World War without any government support, Konrad Mommsen died of starvation in November 1946.
