Konrad Oberhuber

Konrad Oberhuber (born March 31, 1935 in Linz ; † September 12, 2007 in San Diego ) was an Austrian art historian and long-time director of the Albertina .

Life

Konrad Oberhuber studied art history, classical archeology, psychology and philosophy at the University of Vienna , where he in 1959 with a thesis on the court painter Bartholomew Spranger doctorate was. He was also a trained English interpreter. In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna with a work about the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael .

He was visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at Harvard University , since 1984 full professor at Harvard.

In 1961, Oberhuber was appointed curator of the Albertina Prints and Drawings Collection, followed by activities at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA. In 1987 he became director of the Albertina before he was replaced by Klaus Albrecht Schröder in 1999 .

In 2001, Oberhuber was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class .

He died on September 12, 2007 in San Diego, where he had lived with his family since retiring.
