Konrad Schmid (theologian)

Konrad Schmid (born October 23, 1965 in Zurich ) is a Swiss Reformed theologian and professor of the Old Testament at the University of Zurich .

Life

The son of the Zurich Old Testament writer Hans Heinrich Schmid (1937–2014) studied theology at the Universities of Zurich , Greifswald and Munich and received his doctorate in 1996 in Zurich . In 1998 he completed his habilitation while working as a senior assistant in Zurich. From 1999 to 2002 he worked as a professor for Old Testament theology in Heidelberg . Since 2002 he has been professor for Old Testament science and early Jewish religious history in Zurich. In 2006 and 2016 he taught as a visiting professor at the Theological Academic Year, Dormition Abbey , Jerusalem. He spent the academic year 2006–2007 as Member in Residence at the Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) Princeton NJ . From 2008 to 2010 he was dean of the theological faculty at the University of Zurich . From 2012 to 2013 he was a fellow of the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in a group on Convergence and Divergence in Pentateuchal Studies: Bridging the Academic Cultures between Israel, Europe, and North America . In 2017 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton NJ. Since 2017 he has been chairman of the Scientific Society for Theology and member of the research council of the Swiss National Science Foundation . He is the 24th President of IOSOT from 2019 to 2022 . His main research interests are the literary history of the Pentateuch and the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah . Schmid is co-editor of various book series and magazines, including the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel . Konrad Schmid is married to Brigitta Rotach-Schmid and has two children.
