Konrad Zanger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad Zanger (born November 11, 1936 in Lüben ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

Along with Horst Stahlberg , Werner Rautenberg and Peter Fährmann, Zanger was one of the best tennis players in the GDR in the 1950s and 1960s. Zanger celebrated one of his greatest successes in 1958 when he won the GDR youth championship for the second time, defeating Horst Stahlberg . With him he won seven GDR championship titles in doubles.

In their first appearance in Cairo in 1958, the duo Zanger / Stahlberg brought their opponents Garrido / Mackay (Cuba-USA) 6: 4; 6: 8; 3-6 on the verge of defeat in which they missed three match points. This gave them a respectable third place. At the latest, however, with the construction of the Berlin Wall and the concentration of financial resources on Olympic sports, it was clear that the GDR tennis players would play no role internationally.

Post active time

After his active time Zanger acted as head referee at some tournaments and was appointed to the coaching council of the GDR tennis association DTV. After the fall of the Wall, he also worked as a chair referee at the Leipzig Grand Prix tournament. Today he is still committed to the next generation of tennis players in Dresden. However, he has shifted his sporting ambitions to the chessboard due to a hip injury .
