Konstantiniyye is the title of one of the online magazines that the terrorist organizationIslamic State ” (IS) publishes for the purposes of propaganda , recruitment and the legitimation of its own ideology. The online magazine is written in Turkish and has been published at irregular intervals since May 2015. The organization's media facility al-Hayat Media Center is the publisher. There are currently (October 2016) seven editions of the online magazine that are not translations of the English language Dabiq . The journals each have around 45 to 70 pages.

At the moment the production of the magazine seems to be stopped and to be continued by the new propaganda magazine Rumiyah . Rumiyah has been published at regular intervals since September 2016. It represents a more uniform, albeit less detailed, format and is published according to various sources in the languages English, German, French, Turkish, Uighur, Russian, Bahasa Indonesia and Urdu.

Self-description

According to the company, the online magazine should appear monthly. However, this has not yet been realized. The reason for the publication of a Turkish-language magazine is the lack of Turkish sources that give a "correct" picture of the IS organization. In addition to supposed scientific and political clarification, which is to be achieved by means of the online magazine, the intended entertainment value of the magazine is also emphasized.

Addressees

In the first issue of the magazine, the Turks living in Turkey are named as addressees, who do not speak any other language except Turkish. The second edition is also aimed at Turks living abroad and supporters of the terrorist organization.

content

In addition to the presentation of the religious endeavors of the IS organization, topics from everyday political life in Turkey take up a large part of the magazine. For example, the criticism of the Diyanet Presidium for Religious Affairs , the presentation by President Erdoğan or the Kurdish problem from the perspective of the IS organization.

Targets of IS propaganda in relation to Turkey

The founder of the IS organization, Abū Musʿab az-Zarqāwī , cultivated good contacts in Turkey early on . Sometimes the ideology was spread there as early as the early 2000s. From the years 2002/03, az-Zarqawi formulated the goal of conquering the Bilād al-Shām , the so-called historical region of Syria, which also included areas of today's Turkey (also Lebanon, Jordan, Israel / Palestine). This served u. a. as a reason for bringing jihad there too.

The organization's media propaganda in Turkey has two reasons: On the one hand, new members are to be recruited, and on the other, those who position themselves against the organization are to be threatened with the cruel messages. The IS organization determines the image of itself and specifically labels its enemies and victims according to its own understanding. The propaganda is meticulously and professionally tailored to all contexts of Turkish life (politics, everyday life, language).

Alongside suicide bombings, propaganda is one of the organization's most important strategies. It tries to prove that it exists with all the insignia of sovereignty (control over territory, large financial budget, heavy weapons) and that the goal has been achieved, which jihadists have always pursued. In order to communicate this clearly, the media department of the organization publishes in addition to the Turkish-speaking Konstantiniyye other, non-Arabic propaganda online magazines such as the English (and in other translations) Dabiq , the French Dar al-Islam or the Russian Istoq .

The name Konstantiniyye also provides information about the IS organization's view of Turkey and its immediate intention towards it, namely the repatriation to the Caliphatic times when Constantinople was part of an Islamic state. In addition, Constantinople is of particular importance in Islamic eschatology . In particular, a hadith by Abū Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj is the focus of the Turkish-language propaganda magazine. After this the prophet is said to have said that Constantinople would be conquered. The conquest by Sultan Mehmet II ( 1453 ) is not recognized as a conquest according to the understanding of the IS organization.
