Kontuschowka

Kontuschowka , more rarely also in the spelling Kontuschovka , actually in Polish Kontuszówka or in Czech Kontušovka , is an alcoholic beverage flavored with herbs .

The Kontuschowka similar due to the Flavor carrier Anis the absinthe , but is not on wormwood - but on alcohol base fire produced. In the form of flavored oils, aniseed as the main ingredient and (depending on the manufacturer in different quantities and compositions) fennel , juniper , peppermint , coriander , ginger , nutmeg , lemon and pepper are added, with some recipes also honey .

The drink tastes slightly sweet. The alcohol content is between 38 and 60 % by volume .

The Kontuschowka is occasionally classified as a strong herbal liqueur , but does not meet the requirements stipulated by EC law and is therefore rated in the Austrian Food Codex as a "possible imaginary name" and must generally be labeled as "spirits" or "alcoholic beverages".

The name is derived from the Polish kontusz , a type of vest or robe worn by the Polish nobility.

The drink is mentioned literarily in Emil Vachek's novel Bidýlko (1927), Franz Werfels Barbara oder die Piety (1929), George Saiko's novel Der Mann im Schilf (1955) and repeatedly in Jaroslav Hašek's The Good Soldier Schwejk :

“'Now I understand,' said the Rittmeister, ascertaining the unmistakable situation with his keen, tried olfactory sense: 'Rum, Kontuschovka, Griotte, juniper, nut, sour cherry and vanilla brandy."

Furthermore, Sigmund Freud describes the Kontuszówka dream of a patient in The Interpretation of Dreams (first 1910):

“A patient dreamed in a long context that he was having a 'Kontuszowka' in a coffee house, but asked after the story what it was; he never heard the name. I was able to answer that Kontuszowka was a Polish schnapps that he couldn't have invented in his dreams, since I had known the name from posters for a long time. "

Kontuszowka was also the name of a play by Rudolf Lothar and the Austrian distribution title of Erich Engels feature film A Wedding Dream (1936).

recipe

  • 20 g anise fruits,
  • 10 g star anise fruits,
  • 10 g coriander seeds,
  • 0.5 l alcohol 96% vol.,
  • 0.6 l water,
  • 150 ml honey.

Pour alcohol and water over the crushed seeds, leave to rest for two months. Then pour off the liquid, add honey, filter and fill the bottles. After another 3 months, Kontuszówka is ready to drink. The liqueur should show a greenish brown color, sugar content around 10% vol. Serve chilled.
