history

Portal of the Konvikt

The episcopal Konvikt served to accommodate students from outside the grammar school who were to be specifically prepared for a theological career. The forerunner was the school dormitory set up in 1685 at the Hammelburger Tor of the city wall. In 1852 the now-extinct Konvikt was renewed by the Limburg diocese, using a donation from the poet Clemens Brentano to Bishop Peter Josef Blum . This Konvikt was housed in a building on Alte Chaussee, and in the following year it moved to Neugasse.

The building was erected in 1903/05 based on a design by the Limburg diocesan master builder Jakob Fachinger . The eastern edge of the "Damfeld" plateau west of the city was selected as the location that can be seen from afar.

After it was closed by the Gestapo in 1939 and served briefly as a home for teacher training and later as a prisoner-of-war camp for Polish and British officers, the Konvikt fulfilled its original purpose again from 1946 under the name Collegium Bernadinum as a church school home under spiritual direction. In 1969 it became the boarding school of the Limburger Domsingknaben .

In 2008 the last boarding school students left the building. Today it is a day boarding school for the diocese of Limburg , where 8 to 20-year-old boys and young men are supported and trained in music. They form the Limburger Domsingknaben, a boys' choir for classical music and concerts at Limburg Cathedral . Other offices of the Limburg diocese are also located there, including the administration of church music , the work of the Catholic public libraries and the voluntary services for the entire diocese.

Building description

Konvikt seen from the north with a new extension (right)

It is a three-wing historicist building with a mix of medieval and renaissance elements. Two distinctive, pointed-helmeted and partially retracted towers characterize the structure and the entire city panorama of Hadamar. The most valuable construction detail is the representative main staircase with rich stone carvings. Stylistically, it is in contrast to the Hadamar Renaissance castle on the river. The building material comes from the limestone quarries in the area.

In the late 20th century, a modern extension was built on the back of the building.
