The municipal concert choir "Winfridia" has shaped classical choral music in Fulda for more than 140 years .

history

On January 10, 1876, the "Gesang-Gesellschaft-Winfridia" was founded in Fulda as a Catholic men's choir . Named after Winfried Bonifatius , the "Apostle of the Germans", he saw his main task initially in the polyphonic choral singing to embellish the services in the Fulda Cathedral, especially on high church holidays. After the Kulturkampf, people also opened up to secular choral literature and from then on took part in national music festivals and critical singing.

At the end of 1904 the male choir already had over 100 active singers. With the addition of a women's choir, "Winfridia" became a mixed choir on May 16, 1928.

Both the First and the Second World War tore noticeable gaps in the choir, but again and again committed men were found who activated the choir life again through their personal commitment. In 1947 the “Winfridia” finally became an oratorio choir , and due to its special merits in the musical work inside and outside Fulda, the city council of Fulda awarded it the title “municipal concert choir” in 1948. Since then, at least two choral works from world literature have been performed annually.

The choir sang on concert tours at home and abroad, for example in Budapest , Como , Davos , Arles and Strasbourg , Rome, Assisi and Israel (with concerts in Tabgha and Jerusalem).

In 2001 the choir celebrated its 125th anniversary with the performance of "The Seasons" by Joseph Haydn and the "Requiem" by Giuseppe Verdi . From 1982 to 2011 the choir director ADC Reinhold Feldmann was the musical director in charge.

Choir director BDC Carsten Rupp has been the musical director of the concert choir since 2011 and has expanded the repertoire to include secular works from the choral symphonic classical music of the 20th century.

In 2014 the choir joined the Association of German Concert Choirs .

Musical part

The repertoire of "Winfridia" includes Requiem settings by Verdi , Mozart and Brahms , the St. Matthew and St. John Passions as well as the B minor Mass and the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach ; The oratorios by Haydn (“Creation” and “Seasons”) and Handel (“Messiah”) as well as Mendelssohn's “ Elias ” and “ Paulus ” will also be performed.

Works such as “The Eternal Circle” by Fritz Rothschuh (world premiere), A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Annelies by James Whitbourn and Yunus Emre Oratoryosu by A.Adnan Saygun represent the music of the 20th century .

In addition, the choir regularly presents gala concerts with opera choirs and film music as well as hourly chamber music concerts.
