Heinz von Schumann

Heinz von Schumann (born February 14, 1911 in Elbing ; † March 17, 1993 in Waldliesborn ) was a German organist , choir conductor , music director, composer and high school teacher .

Life

Schumann attended the humanistic Royal High School in Elbing . After graduating from high school, he studied musicology with Joseph Müller-Blattau and German studies with Josef Nadler and Paul Hankamer at the Albertus University in Königsberg from 1931 . In the second semester of 1931 he was appointed organist and choir director at the Church of the Holy Family (Königsberg) . At the same time, he went through practical musical training at the University Institute for School and Church Music. In 1933 he took over the direction of the Schubert Choir in Königsberg . In 1935 he made him an oratorio choir and performed works by Joseph Haas , Hermann Grabner and Hans Pfitzner with him . He also headed Thalia from 1937 and the Königsberg men's choir from 1938/39.

In 1935 he married a daughter of the famous beekeeper Carl Rehs . Between 1936 and 1948 she gave him six daughters and two sons. In 1939 he passed the artistic examination for teaching at secondary schools in Berlin. For the Wehrmacht moved in, he took 1939 to 1945 at the Second World War, in part, fighting the invasion of Poland , in the Western campaign and German-Soviet war . Nevertheless, in 1941, after a further semester of study, he was able to take the scientific examination for teaching at secondary schools in Königsberg. In the same year he moved to the Catholic Adalbertkirche (Königsberg) as organist . After 1943 finally passed the Educational testing in Berlin, he was Studienassessor and 1944 teacher .

In the Battle of East Prussia , his wife fled with seven small children on January 23, 1945 on the hospital ship Pretoria across the Baltic Sea to Greifswald . There Schumann built a youth choir and a youth orchestra of the Free German Youth . Urged to become a member of the SED , he fled with his family to Hesse . In 1947 he became a student councilor and music commissioner for the city of Fulda . With the concert choir "Winfridia" Fulda and the Municipal Chamber Orchestra he staged the world premiere of the Requiem Mass by Joseph Haas and his own cantata peace on earth .

From 1953 to 1955 he moved to Duisburg as a teacher , where he directed the East Prussian Choir. Afterwards he was municipal music director in Lippstadt until his retirement in 1969 .
