Koogu is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Aseri ( Aseri vald ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 32 inhabitants (as of 2011).

At the beginning of the 13th century, the village of Paimela was in what is now Koogu. Later the Koogu manor developed from it . It was first mentioned in a document in 1685. In 1807 the estate became the property of the noble Baltic German family Essen .

In the first half of the 19th century, the historic mansion was built, an elongated, single-storey stone building. It burned down in 1904. In the former park of the estate, only the ruins can be seen today. There are still some outbuildings from that time, most of which have been rebuilt.

The last owner of the property before it was expropriated as part of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the Baltic German Otto von Schilling .
