Netball (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Netball is a ball sport for two teams . The aim of the game is to throw a ball into the opponent's basket as often as possible . The netball played in Switzerland is primarily similar to basketball and is thus related to korfball and netball . Although netball is played both in Switzerland and Germany , the rules of the two games differ considerably.

Rules of the game

The field of Swiss basketball is usually 20 by 30 m (women) or 25 by 40 m (men). The basket area is a square with a side length of 3 m, which is centered between the side lines on the basket line in both halves of the game. On the one hand, it serves as a throwing zone after baskets have been scored or after the ball has crossed the basket line and was last touched by a player from the attacking team; on the other hand as a limitation for penalty throws.

The basket stand is placed on the basket line in the middle between the side lines. The basket has a diameter of 45 cm and is attached at a height of 3 m. Unlike basketball, there is no board behind the basket. In the hall, however, basketball hoops can also be used.

Field of basketball played in Switzerland

The game ball is similar to a football : the circumference is 68 to 72 cm and the weight is between 500 and 550 g.

In field basketball a team consists of 6 players, in indoor basketball it consists of 5 players, each plus substitutes. A game usually lasts 2 times 20 minutes. However, the seasons in many cantonal leagues differ significantly due to different association regulations.

Regional associations

The netball teams are divided into five different regions of Switzerland to which cantons are assigned. The regional associations organize championships themselves; in addition, the qualifying games for the U16 and U14 Swiss championships for boys and girls are organized by the regional associations.

Game operation

The game is organized by the Swiss Gymnastics Federation. In contrast to Germany, in Switzerland it is mainly played outdoors during spring and summer. There are four national leagues: the national leagues A and B for men and the national leagues A and B for women. The teams of the respective leagues compete against each other twice in the course of a season and thus determine the promoted and relegated teams. The top teams in the two national leagues A at the end of the season are Swiss champions.

In winter there is a national cup competition, for which teams from the lower leagues have to qualify. There is also a U20 championship where the players are not older than 20 years. The winner with the most points is the Swiss champion.

history

After basketball, which August Hermann had adapted under the name of "basketball", enjoyed increasing popularity in Germany towards the end of the 19th century, this sport also became known in Switzerland. Here basketball was first mentioned in a 1901 "Handbook of Movement Games for Girls". In 1912, basketball was included in boys 'gymnastics classes and in girls' classes in 1916. In contrast to Germany, no rule changes borrowed from the handball game were carried out in Switzerland , so that the basketball variants in the two countries have differed significantly from one another since the 1920s at the latest. Furthermore, basketball in Switzerland did not develop into a women's sport as it had developed in Germany.

A national game operation was only started in 1971, when the qualification for the men's national league started. The following year, a national tournament for women's teams was held for the first time. Similar to the development in Germany, regional strongholds also formed in Switzerland; above all the canton of Bern , central Switzerland and north-eastern Switzerland .
