The Korean barberry ( Berberis koreana ) is a species in the genus of barberry ( Berberis ) in the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae). The homeland of the Korean barberry is in Korea .
description
The Korean barberry is a deciduous (deciduous) shrub up to 1.5 meters high . The growth is upright, the twigs are dark brown and furrowed, the thorns one to three parts, sometimes multi-pointed, and up to 1 centimeter long. The leaves are egg-shaped to elliptical, up to 7 centimeters long, reticulate and wedge-shaped at the base. They are medium green on top with sometimes reddish leaf veins , blue-green and spotted on the underside. The leaves turn bright red in autumn. The flowers are yellow and in May are 10 to 20 in bunches up to 6 centimeters long. The berries are spherical and bright red. The fruits have a vitamin C and fruit acid content (up to 11%). The fruits are elliptical to cylindrical, ten to twelve millimeters long, seven millimeters wide and dark red in color. The fruits stay on the bush well into winter.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
Location
The best conditions for the shrub are sunny to partially shaded locations, slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions.
Systematics
The plants known in Central Europe as Berberis koreana do not correspond to the botanical description, since the fruit of the original species is rather rounded and is also not as vigorous.
