history

At the end of the 19th century there were large pine forests in the area of Korfos that were used for resin extraction . The port of Korfos was finally founded to ship the harvest. In 1912 it became a municipality in the prefecture of Argolis and Korinthia and from 1949 in the prefecture of Korinthia. With the Kapodistrias program it became part of the former municipality of Solygia and has been a local community of the municipality of Corinth since the administrative reform in 2010 .

Worth seeing

About 3 km northeast of the town is the Byzantine cross-domed church Osios Loukas Stiritis ( Greek Όσιος Λουκάς Στειρίτης ) from the 11th century. It was the catholicon of a monastery that goes back to Saint Luke von Steiris , who lived near Corinth from 918 to 928. The church still has old marble decorations and frescoes by the hagiographer Theodoulos Kakavas from Nafplio from 1668.

To the west above the village is the chapel of Agia Anna from 1774 and parts of a former monastery. The Agii Pandes chapel, north above the village, was once part of a monastery. In the town center is the main church Zoodochos Pigi from the 20th century.

About 2.5 km east of the Kalamianos peninsula are the remains of an ancient port from the Bronze Age . It is also called Agamemnon's harbor by the locals . About 1.5 km to the northeast are the ruins of a second Bronze Age settlement on the Stiri. There are also remains of buildings and walls from this time in the vicinity of the two settlements.

The bay of Selonda, about 3 km south of Korfos on the border with the Argolis , served as a safe hiding place for the Greek submarine Papanikolis during World War II .
