Kostheim Bridge

The Kostheimer Brücke connects the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kostheim with Ginsheim-Gustavsburg (district of Gustavsburg) across the Main . The road bridge is part of the federal highway 43 , on the Kostheim side it also bears the name Hauptstraße and on the Gustavsburg side Darmstädter Landstraße .

The original bridge with truss - arch supports the MAN plant Gustavsburg on piers, the construction company Philipp Holzmann & Cie. in caisson foundation, was put into operation in 1887 and, after being destroyed in World War II, rebuilt in 1947 with a simpler Warren framework .

The Kostheimer Brücke is the last Main bridge before it flows into the Rhine at km 1.330. It is listed in the route of industrial culture Rhein-Main Mainspitze .

The Kostheimer Bridge is part of the " Drei-Brücken-Lauf ", the other two are the Rhine bridges Theodor-Heuss-Brücke and the Südbrücke .

Due to increasing traffic load, Hessen Mobil is planning to build the bridge again. In the course of this planning, the monument value of the bridge is checked. The State Office for Monument Preservation in Hesse is considering recognizing the bridge as a cultural monument .

Predecessor structures

Already in Roman times - see Mogontiacum and Römerbrücke (Mainz) - there was a Main Bridge nearby. Remains of the bridge piers can only be found today when the water is extremely low in the Main on the Gustavsburg side, approx. 200 m west of today's Kostheimer Bridge. They are aligned with the course of the Main at that time.
