features
The crowberry-leaved St. John's wort is a dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 10 to 60 centimeters. The leaves are in three whorls on the stem axes. The sepals are egg-shaped and have black, sessile glands on the edge . There are axillary leaf shoots. The capsule has oblique vesicles.
The flowering period extends from April to August, rarely until October.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
The crowberry-leaved St. John's wort is an eastern Mediterranean species. It occurs on the islands of the central and southern Aegean , on the Peloponnese , in eastern central Greece, along the Turkish Aegean coast and in Cyrenaica . The deposits on the Ionian islands of Lefkada , Kephallonia and Zakinthos as well as on the Chalkidike peninsula are already outside the closed area . Isolated sites are in Northern Albania and Northern Cyprus .
The species grows in pine forests, phrygana and crevices on limestone at altitudes from 0 to 2300 meters.
Systematics
The crowberry- leaved St. John's wort belongs to the Coridium section . In addition to the widespread type subspecies, there are two other endemic subspecies on Crete :
- Hypericum empetrifolium subsp. empetrifolium is a small shrub with upright branches. The leaves are 7 to 11 millimeters long and narrow. The inflorescences are 8 to 40 flowered. The flowers are large. The subspecies grows mostly on lime-poor soils in maquis , phrygana and light forests at altitudes from 0 to 1200 meters.
- Hypericum empetrifolium subsp. tortuosum (Rech.f.) I. Hagemann is a trellis bush with heavily lignified branches that are pressed against the ground. The leaves are approximated and 2 to 3 millimeters long. The inflorescences are mostly single, rarely up to 4-flowered. The subspecies is endemic to Crete and grows on limestone soils in hedgehog cushion heaths , mountain forests and on sinkholes at altitudes of 1400 to 2300 meters.
- Hypericum empetrifolium subsp. oliganthum (Rech.f.) I. Hagemann is a pillow-shaped, multi-layered dwarf shrub. The leaves are 4 to 6 millimeters long. The inflorescences are 4 to 7 flowered. The subspecies is endemic to Crete and grows in crevices, phrygana and pine forests at altitudes from 0 to 1450 meters.
