The bus company Wupsi GmbH ( spelling wupsi , formerly Kraftverkehr Wupper-Sieg AG or KWS) with headquarters in Leverkusen operates most of the regular bus services in Leverkusen and many lines in the Rheinisch-Bergischen district. Kraftverkehr Wupper-Sieg AG was founded on March 3, 1924 by the district council of the former Wipperfürth district.

history

Old logo of KWS / Wupsi (until 2008)

After the transformation into a stock corporation in 1929, Wupsi grew rapidly. After the Second World War , the Wupsi operating area continued to expand towards the south-west until the company's headquarters were relocated to Leverkusen in the second half of the 1970s. On March 19, 1979, the administration, then on April 23, the workshop and bus operations were relocated to their current locations in Leverkusen- Fixheide . A few years later, another depot was built in Bergisch Gladbach , from which operations in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis are carried out. In December 2007, Regionalverkehr Köln GmbH (RVK), which until then had operated its own depot directly at the train station , also moved into the Wupsi depot in Bergisch Gladbach. There are also car halls ("bus depots") of the Wupsi in Kürten -Weiden and -Dürscheid, in which some vehicles are parked overnight in order to avoid the long trips to and from Bergisch Gladbach in the morning and evening. For this reason, vehicles are also parked at the OVAG depot in Wipperfürth- Hammern.

vehicles

The approximately 140 Wupsi-owned buses are now exclusively from the manufacturers MAN and Mercedes-Benz ; in the past, vehicles from manufacturers such as Neoplan and Büssing were also represented in the fleet. All vehicles are equipped with an electronic stop display and announcement; in the newer vehicles this is implemented using TFT monitors. All vehicles have radio equipment , the associated radio number is the car number of the KWS vehicles. Since the mid-1990s, retired vehicles have been gradually replaced by low-floor vehicles . Since December 2009, all Wupsi buses have been low-floor buses. Since August 2003, it has been mandatory in all vehicles to get into the bus driver and show him the ticket or to purchase a ticket from him. In the Cologne city area, where all doors can be used to get in and out, the handling differs from driver to driver.

At the end of 2010, all Wupsi buses, as well as those of the subcontractors, received new ticket printers with TFT monitors. The bus driver can also use these devices to check the validity of electronic tickets.

traffic

Wupsi operates large parts of the regular bus service in Leverkusen and in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . Around 25% of the transport services are currently provided by 5 subcontractors . In 2008, 30.77 million passengers were carried and an annual turnover of € 27.94 million was achieved. Wupsi is a member of the Rhein-Sieg transport association , its conditions of carriage and community tariffs apply. It is also active in the tourism sector through its subsidiary Herweg Busbetrieb GmbH .

Wupsi's four customer centers are located in Bergisch Gladbach (bus station), LEV-Opladen (bus station), LEV-Wiesdorf (City Point) and at the LEV-Fixheide depot.

In addition, various E-lines in the morning and in the afternoon complete the offer and, above all, ensure that the entire service area (including rural regions) is connected to the large school centers. On the main traffic axes, E-lines also relieve regular line traffic at peak times.

Former lines

Some of the gaps in the number offered by Wupsi were caused by the discontinuation of individual lines. Due to the steadily declining demand and the existence of alternative offers, traffic to and from the Bayer plant in Leverkusen has been steadily thinned out in recent years, and individual feeder lines have been completely discontinued; such as line 216, which once ran from Odenthal Blecher via Neuboddenberg and Schlebusch to the Bayerwerk, and line 218, which ran from Im Eisholz to the Bayerwerk. Line 226 from Opladener Stauffenbergstraße ensured the connection from Quettingen, Fixheide and Alkenrath to the Bayer plant. Lines 227 and 233 still exist, although the connection to the Bayer plant (in the HVZ) was omitted. The return journeys on route 220 have been canceled so that it only carries its passengers in the morning without changing to the Bayerwerk, while they have to change in the afternoon. The offer was also thinned out at the weekend. At the weekend, line 201 is now the only line, alongside line 250 from Kraftverkehr Wiedenhoff , that connects Leverkusen-Mitte with Bayerwerke. Other Wupsi lines that have been discontinued are about 219 (Monheim, Landwirtschaftszentrum - Leverkusen Mitte Bf), 234 (Leichlingen - Langenfeld), 235 (Leichlingen - Leverkusen-Rheindorf) and 243 (Leverkusen-Hitdorf - Langenfeld S).

Other lines were shortened by the municipal reorganization in 1975 or were given a different operator. The former traffic connection 021 from Lüdenscheid via Halver and Wipperfürth to Bergisch Gladbach and Cologne was shortened to the route Wipperfürth - Cologne. It was not until the timetable change in 1987 that this connection, now with line number 426, was shortened to Wipperfürth - Bergisch Gladbach. The connection Wipperfürth - Rönsal - Kiespe - Lüdenscheid was also canceled in the course of the municipal reorganization. The transport connection 428 on the route Bergisch Gladbach - Lindlar was operated in a shortened form by Wupsi for a few years before it was continued as line 335 by OVAG on its old length Bergisch Gladbach - Lindlar - Frielingsdorf.

strike

On January 9, 2004, 50 employees of Herweg-Busbetrieb GmbH, a subsidiary of KWS, went on strike against low wages . This strike lasted until February 8, 2005, or 396 days, making it one of the longest strikes in Germany's history . It ended with the conclusion of a company collective agreement.
