The Châtelard-Barberine SBB power plant was commissioned as a storage power plant in 1923 and expanded into a pumped storage power plant in 1977 . It supplies single-phase alternating current with a frequency of 16.7 Hz for the traction power supply of western Switzerland and the Simplon line .

history

In 1916, the SBB decided to electrify the rail network, with the electricity required for rail operations being generated in its own power stations. For this purpose, the SBB acquired the concession to use the water in the Barberine and some of its tributaries in 1917 , and in 1919 approved a loan of CHF 35 million for the construction of the Châtelard-Barberine power station. The plant was the upper tier of the two-stage power plant group Kraftwerk Barberine-Vernayaz .

When operations began, three Pelton turbines with a capacity of 16,600 HP were in the machine house at Le Châtelard VS , a fourth Pelton turbine was installed as an operating reserve in 1929.

technology

The water from the Barberine dammed up to Lac d'Emosson is processed in the two-stage Barberine-Vernayaz power station . The first stage is formed by the Châtelard-Barberine power station with the control centers 1 and 2, the second stage by the Vernayaz power station .

In the central Châtelard-Barberine I, three horizontal machine sets are housed, which consist of a single-jet Pelton turbine and a synchronous generator . The output of each machine set is 11.5 MW. A fourth machine set of the same size is no longer in operation. The turbines work with a head of 804 m.

In the Châtelard-Barberine II headquarters there are two vertical machine sets with two-nozzle Pelton turbines. Each machine set can deliver an output of 40 MW in turbine operation at a head of 811 m . One machine set is designed as a pump turbine with a power consumption of 30 MW in pumping mode. At full load, 12 m³ / s in turbine mode and 4 m³ / s in pump mode run through the control center.

The turbined water is discharged into a 200,000 m³ equalization basin. From there, the water can be fed to the Châtelard-Barberine II pump turbine or the Vernayaz power station using two feed pumps. Each pump receives its energy from the 16.7 Hz network and has an output of 1.1 MW . This solution had to be chosen because the power plant did not have a sufficiently powerful 50 Hz network for connecting the pumps. There are misused 4/4 II Re - traction motors used, which drive the pump via a transmission.
