The SBB power station Vernayaz went into operation in 1928. It supplies single-phase alternating current with a frequency of 16.7 Hz for the traction power supply of western Switzerland and the Simplon line .

history

The Vernayaz power plant is the second stage of the Barberine-Vernayaz power plant group . Its construction was decided with the program for accelerated electrification of the SBB network approved in 1923.

The power plant went into operation in January 1927. When operations began, there were five Pelton turbines in the machine house, each with an output of 19,800 hp. Four of them produced the 16 2 / 3 Hz traction power, a 50 Hz power industry. The total output of the plant was thus 99,000 hp . The installation of a sixth turbine was planned.

In the 1940s, the power plant was converted to its current configuration with three Pelton turbines. They came from the Ateliers des Charmilles SA in Geneva .

technology

The water from the Barberine dammed up to Lac d'Emosson is processed in the two-stage Barberine-Vernayaz power station . The first stage is formed by the Châtelard-Barberine power station , the second stage by the Vernayaz power station. In addition to the runoff from the Châtelard-Barberine power plant, the water from the Eau Noire and Trient is also processed in this, which is processed by the Trento secondary power plant before it is discharged into the inlet tunnel. The inlet tunnel at Les Marécottes flows into an equalization basin, from where a pressure tunnel leads to the water lock in Les Granges, where the pressure line to the headquarters begins.

The headquarters in Vernayaz house three machine sets, which consist of a two-nozzle horizontal Pelton turbine and a synchronous generator - two machine sets have an output of 40 MVA , one of them 27 MVA. The turbines operate at a drop height m of 645, the speed of the units is 501 min -1 . The single-phase alternating current generated has a frequency of 16.7 Hz and is used to power the railway's overhead lines. At full load, 17.4 m³ of water flows through the control center per second.
