The Claus power plant ( Dutch Clauscentrale ) is a gas-fired power plant in the Netherlands , which is located in the immediate vicinity of the town of Maasbracht in the Limburg province . It is owned by Essent NV, a subsidiary of RWE, and is also operated by Essent.
The power plant was named after Prince Claus , who officially opened the power plant in 1978.
Data
With an installed capacity of currently 1,945 MW , it is the second most powerful power plant in the Netherlands after the Eems power plant with 2,400 MW.
Power plant units
The power plant currently consists of 2 blocks. The following table gives an overview:
block | machine | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A. | 1 | 640 | 1977 | Siemens | Siemens | Stork |
C. | 1 | 280 | 01.2012 | Alstom | Alstom | Alstom |
2 | 280 | 01.2012 | Alstom | Alstom | Alstom | |
3 | 280 | 01.2012 | Alstom | Alstom | Alstom | |

The Claus power plant was opened in 1977 with two blocks (A and B) each with a capacity of 640 MW. Both blocks were steam power plants.
In 2009, work began on modernizing Block B and converting it into a combined cycle power plant, today's Block C. Block C was officially opened on June 26, 2012, but had been in operation since January 1, 2012. The cost of converting Unit B to Unit C was € 1 (or 1.1) billion.
Block A was shut down at the beginning of 2013 due to a lack of profitability. In the long term, like Block B, it could be converted into a combined cycle power plant. So far, however, there is no concrete construction plan. The efficiency of block A is 40%, that of block C 58.5 (or 59)%.
On July 1, 2014, Unit C was decommissioned because it could not be operated profitably at the electricity prices at the time. In October 2018, it was decided to put Unit C back into operation. The power plant should be available again for electricity production by the end of 2020.
The information on the installed capacity of the two blocks varies: for block A there are 640 MW as well as 610 or 639 MW, for block C besides 1,280 MW also 1,300, 1,305 and 1,309 MW.
